about

Disclaimer Westerling

Bas Siersema would like to stress that the track Westerling is solely his opinion and not that of the band.
The track Westerling is by no means meant as an offence towards any one person or group of persons. Foremost, these words must be viewed through the perspective of Raymond Pierre Paul Westerling (* 31 August 1919 – † 26 November 1987).
Captain Westerling was a Dutch Special Forces (DST) commander of the Royal Dutch East Indies Army (K.N.I.L), who fell victim to false Indonesian and Dutch war propaganda. To this day, he is wrongfully accused of murdering tens of thousands of innocents during his ’46/‘47 campaign to pacify South Sulawesi (best known as ‘de Zuid-Celebes affaire’).
The number of deaths is highly exaggerated, as proven through research by Lt. Col. Dr. M. Natzir Saïd and his staff at the University of Ujung Pandang (Indonesia, 1977). Their report clearly states that during Westerling’s stay, from December 1946 till February 1947, a total of 256 Indonesians were executed through summary justice. The number of 40,000+ was declared to be nothing more than anti-Dutch propaganda talks by Soekarno.
In fact, Westerling and his DST only tried to execute criminal ‘nationalist’ elements, guilty of raping, murdering and pillaging. True nationalist aspirations were always recognized and respected.
Unfortunately, Westerling is still used as a scapegoat by both the Netherlands and Indonesia. It seems our nations’ historians would rather argue about fictive numbers, than for instance write about the period of time before Westerling’s arrival on Sulawesi, when infiltrated Javanese, rampokkers and renegade Japanese troops, brutally tortured and murdered hundreds of Indonesian men, women and children.
Even more concerning is the systematic failure to acknowledge the entire Bersiap period, during which so-called Indonesian nationalists tortured, raped and murdered thousands of innocent Indo-European and Dutch women, children and men, all in the name of the national flag.
Holistic studies about this specific phenomenon of the Indonesian national revolution are hardly present at all. From the Dutch side the focus is mostly on particular locations and incidents, while Indonesian historians mainly focus on the heroic side of the revolution.
This song will hopefully function as a healthy platform for discussion, as 65+ years later the whole subject is still regarded with mixed feelings by both of our countries. If at all regarded…
This song is also a dedication to veterans from both sides (K.N.I.L and T.N.I), which fought with honor for something that they believed in. Not the murderers and rapists. It is dedicated to my brothers and sisters in Darah Ketiga and the entire Dutch-Indo community. Remember: knowing where we come from helps us to know where we are going.
Most of all I would like to dedicate this song to my Indo grandmother C. Vossen- Siersema and grandfather, K.N.I.L veteran and retired warrant officer W. Siersema, both living inspiration. Selamat dan hormat. –Bas Siersema. Maastricht, 15 August 2011.

lyrics

Firezone- Westerling (lyrics: B. Siersema)

i see what must be done
for justice to overcome
extreme reaction come
when battle must be won

this blood is on my hands
cause i care about this land
don’t think i don’t give a damn
i die with each ditch i cram

i killed the ones who were guilty
fought all evil without mercy
protected women and children
securing life in the kampong

rescued kidnapped solo
without hesitation or any dough
never backed down from a mission
even with lack of proper acquisition

accused of colonial sentiments
i was never against independence
but under javanese supremacy
indonesia still wouldn’t be free

betrayed by my own kind
for serving i find myself confined
this country i once called my own
left me dishonored and all alone

this one’s for d.s.t
the topi merah or k.s.t
for the ones that served in k.n.i.l
forgotten heroes of military drill

victims of propaganda
never forget these memoranda
what is taught in history class
is unlike law of conservation of mass
